What to Expect at Tryouts

How early should I arrive to tryouts?

  • We recommend showing up about 15–20 minutes before the start time.

  • Check-in for each tryout will begin 20 minutes before the tryout begins.

What do I do once I arrive?

  • When you get inside, you’ll see volunteers at a table to sign you in. Don’t skip this step—it’s important! They’ll give you your tryout number, write it on the outside of each leg, and check you in with the coaches.

How will coaches remember who I am?

  • Some sessions will have a lot of athletes, and it’s tough to remember everyone’s names. That’s why we write numbers on your legs—it helps coaches keep notes connected to the right person. We know some of you like to wear leggings, but it really helps if you wear shorts so your number is easy to see.

I have a “good birthday” and can play on two teams. Do I go to both tryouts?

  • If you’re born between September 1 and December 31, you can play in your own age group and the one younger. But we ask that you attend the older tryout, that being with athletes who have the same birth year as you.

  • Example: If your birthday is December 1, 2011, we ask that you try out for the 15U team.

  • Coaches watch multiple teams, so they’ll see you either way. Don’t worry—we keep track of “good birthdays” and make changes if needed.

If I have to miss a tryout, who do I tell?

Do I need to be at all three tryouts?

  • Nope! You only need to attend one of the first two. The third tryout is invite-only. However, we would recommend that you get to each of the first two tryouts, if possible.

How are teams picked?

  • It’s a team effort! The coaching staff makes the final decisions, but all the coaches talk things over together. You’ll see different coaches around the gym, and after tryouts everyone meets to discuss rosters. That way, the process is fair and everyone gets considered.

When will I know if I made a team?

  • According to VNB, we can send invitations starting September 13 at midnight. Some coaches may hit “send” right away, but most emails will probably go out in the morning.

  • If a team sends out 12 invites and all 12 players say yes, then the rest of the athletes will get an email saying they didn’t make the roster. Everyone will get an email—yes or no.

  • You’ll have 48 hours to accept or decline your spot. If someone says no, the coaches move to the next athlete on the list. It is possible that some rosters are finalized as late as Sept 14/15.

  • If it’s Sunday night and you haven’t heard anything yet, don’t panic—it just means the roster isn’t confirmed and the process is still going. We will send emails and post to Facebook when a team is finalized.
